(38)Kylie Minogueはブロンドだったっけ? [文法]
Kylie Minogue
I am not sure she is a blonde. All I remember is her white skin and sexy dancing in her music vedio clip of album of "X". I happened to see it in a music count down program on cable TV the other day. I don't know why, but Kylie appered in my mind when I thought of a blonde.
カイリー・ミノーグがブロンドかどうかはっきり知らない。覚えていることといえば、真っ白な肌と、セクシーなダンスをするアルバムXのビディオクリップのことだけだ。たまたま見た、順位付けの音楽番組の中に彼女の姿があった。そのせいかどうか知らないが、金髪女性(ブロンド)を思い浮かべるとカイリー・ミノーグが現れた。
I finished reading "Better English", a book on English grammer. I sometimes found interesting example sentences that the author used in order to explain several rules of grammer. He seems to like blondes very much.
英文法の本Better Englishを読み終えた。ときどき面白い例文を見つけた、著者が文法の規則を説明するために使っていた。この著者は金髪女性がお気に入りのようだ。
(1) The majority of men prefer blondes.
(例文1)多くの男性は金髪女性がお好き
When a fraction or a measuring word, like majority, indicates a single idea or a collective unity (two-thirds of the work), a singular verb is required: "Two-thirds of the work is done." However, when the fraction or measuring word is followed by a prepositional phrase containing a plural noun (three-quaters of the soldiers) or in some other way shows strong plurality, a plural verb is required: "Two-thirds of the men are farmers"; "Three-fourths of the population are farmers."
prepositional phrase: 前置詞句
分数や計測用語、たとえばmajorityが、単数の意味または、集合的にひとつであること(仕事の三分の二)を示す場合は、動詞は単数形となる:「仕事の三分の二は終わった。」 しかし分数や計測用語の後に前置詞句が続き、その中身が複数形の名詞であるとか、(三分の二の兵隊)複数の意味が強い場合は、複数形の動詞が使われる:「三分の二の男性は農民です。」;「人口の四分の三は農民だ。」
(2) What we need in this country is more blondes.
(例文2)私たちが、この国で必要なのは、もっとたくさんの金髪女性だ。
Blondes is a predicate noun and, though plural, does not attract the verb into the plural, since the verb is governed by its subject, which in such a sentence is the entire clause what we need in this country; and clauses are considered singular in number.
predicate noun : 述語名詞
Blondes は述語名詞で、複数形ではあるが、使用される動詞を複数形へ変える必要はない。なぜならば、動詞はその主語によって、その形式が決められ、この文の場合、文節"what we need in this country"が主語にあたり、文節は単数と扱われるため動詞は単数形となる。
