火垂（ほた）るの墓　Grave of fireflies
二十年以上前に、ラジオで野坂さんが、この小説の話だったか、自分の実話だったか、幼い妹が戦時中に死んでいった話をしていたのを聞いた気がする、内容はほとんど覚えてないが、胸が締め付けらた事だけが記憶に残っている。そのころ、テレビで見ていた野坂さんには、何か不真面目な印象を持っていた私にとって、この話にはびっくりした。そして、この話のことは忘れていた。最近アニメの火垂（ほた）るの墓を見て、ああ、こんな話だったんだと思った。
先日、本屋の児童図書コーナで見つけて、買って読んだ。

「・・・ドロップの缶もて余したようにふると、カラカラと鳴り、駅員はモーションをつけて駅前の焼跡、すでに夏草しげく生えたあたりの暗がりへほうり投げ、落ちた拍子にそのふたがとれて、白い粉がこぼれ、ちいさい骨のかけらが三つころげ、草に宿っていた蛍がおどろいて二、三十あわただしく点滅してとびかい、やがて静まる。
　白い骨は清太の妹、節子、八月二十二日西宮満池谷横穴防空壕の中で死に、死病の名は急性腸炎とされたが、実は四歳にして足腰立たぬまま、眠るようにみまかったので、兄と同じ栄養失調による衰弱死。」

試訳： Afterwords There had been a war before you were born. A lot of people were killed. And Japan decided not to have any wars again. But it is now accepting wars. Japan is ready to be entangled in wars. What do you think of this situation? You have now plenty of food around you. But most of them are imported from foreign countries. If any wars were fought against Japan no food would come to Japan. Then Japanese people will surely starve to die soon. When I was small, agriculture was Japan's main industry. I could feel the farmers' efforts given to their farming. We could thank  farmers and their harvests, and appreciate fruits of the earth, water, god's gift. When we say "Itadakimasu" at every meal,  we put all appreciation to this Japanese words. Please don't waste food. I saw several people starve to die during the war, and after the war. I hate wars. We should never have wars. I don't want you experience the same sadness. When you grow up, we who experienced the war will have passed away. Please think of wars reading this book. People have often suggested me write about reminiscence of her, but have never felt like writing until today.  I have hesitated to start reporting on my own life because I just wondered if it has any meaning for others. But I will write on it now. I want to put down about a life of a woman as simply as possible. I dedicate this writing to her, who had lived for Taisho and Showa era, unnoticed by all, being afflicted with this kind of thing, living for that kind of thing, breaking down from those things. Knowing about one man perfectly is equal to knowing of all. Beliving in this, I am going to write on her at this time of the war years. Thinking about her even now, it seemed that she had kept within her the fate of living a hard and short life. She had lived in the so much different and separated world from a secular world. I remember that I sometimes felt her as the soul cleansed sin. She did not have any worldly desires. She had just longed for art and lived for love to me. Besides she had been young. She looked quite young both physically and spritually. Everywhere we stopped in our trips, they took her as my younger sister or even as my daughter. She possesed this kind of youth. When she was near her death she did not look as a woman over fifty at a glance. On our newly-married days, I could not imagine her aged features, so I jokingly said "I wonder if even you get aged." At that time she happened to reply "I will die before getting old." I remember this conversation with her, and she just followed what she had said.

 Peter Rabbit is a famous tale written by Beatrix Potter. I happened to get the picture book, PETER RABBIT GIANT TREASURY. This book contains other tales than Peter Rabbit. The Tailor of Gloucester is one of them. Let me introduce this tale.

The Tailor of Gloucester is a children's novel by Beatrix Potter that was first published in October 1903.It is traditionally read to children on Christmas eve, just before bed time. Synopsis This book tells the story of a poor tailor, his cat, and the mice that live in his shop. He has many scraps of cloth and ribbons left over that are too small for any practical use. The mice take these and make fine clothes for themselves. The tailor sends his cat Simpkin to buy food and a twist of cherry-coloured silk for a coat the mayor has commissioned for his wedding, which will take place on Christmas morning. While the cat is gone, he frees the mice from teacups where Simpkin has imprisoned them. When Simpkin returns and finds his mice gone, he hides the twist in anger. When the tailor falls ill, the mice save the day by completing the coat. (One buttonhole remains incomplete because the mice run out of twist). The picturesque building the story is set in is, externally at least, virtually unchanged from Beatrix Potter's time. 超訳と原文を比べてみた。⑨she was now beyond pretence.のpretence (ふり)部分が超訳では具体的に、ながながと文章で説明している。

⑦にあるように、女性は過去の男性経歴については、新しい恋人には話さないほうが良いようだ。

「不思議の国のアリス」は有名な童話、ノンセンス文学であるが、初めて読んでみたけれど、むずかしい。講談社インターナショナル㈱の　Alice's Adventures in Wonderland　を読み通した。　内容を楽しむためには解説書が必要と感じた。　

その後、別宮貞徳さんの　「不思議の国のアリス」英語で読む　を読んだ。理解が深まり、少し面白くなった。

次の　トランプの言い合い　の部分は、別宮さんの言うとおり、世に出回っている翻訳本の中には、はっきり訳し切れてないものもあるようだ。　手持ちの二冊のこの部分を読んでみたが、今、ひとつわかりにくいという感じがする。この三人のトランプが誰に向かって、はなしているのか、はっきりしないものがある。⑦の his business とは誰のことか？別宮さんが正しいとすれば、私の手持ちの翻訳本のこの部分は誤訳ということになると思う。

別宮さんの訳を転記します。英文はトランプの２を黒色、５を青色、７をピンク色で区分してみた。（下のトランプの絵の色に合わせました。）
　

①"Look out now, Five! Don't go splashing paint over me like that!"
「気をつけろよ、五兵衛。そんなにペンキをひっかけるなよォ」

②"I couldn't help it," said Five, in a sulky tone. "Seven jogged my elbow."
「だってしょうがねえだろう。七兵衛がおれの腕を押したからさ」五兵衛が口をとがらせました。

③On which Seven looked up and said, "That's right, Five always lay the blame on others!"
それを聞いた七兵衛は顔をあげて、よく言うよ。いつだってひとのせいにしやがる。」

④"You'd better not talk!" said Five. "I heard the Queen say only yesterday you deserved to be beheaded."
「黙ってるほうが身のためだぜ」と五兵衛。「つい昨日のこった。女王さまがおしゃってたっけ。おめえなんざ打首だって。」

⑤"What for?" said the one who had spoken first.
「どういうわけだ。」最初に口をきいた男が言いました。

⑥"That's none of your business, Two!" said Seven.
「おいおい二兵衛、おまえさんは関係ないだろう」と七兵衛が言った

⑦"Yes, it is his business!" said Five. "And I'll tell him ― it was for bringing the cook tulip-roots instead of onions."
のにおっかぶせて、五兵衛が言うには、「そうよ二兵衛、この野郎に関係大ありなのさ。いいかおめえ、この野郎はなあ―　料理番のところへ、玉ネギと間違えて、チューリップの球根を持っていきやがったのよ。」

⑧Seven flung down his brush, and had just began, "Well, of all the unjust things―"
七兵衛は刷毛をほうり出し「なにィ、よくもよくもひでえことを―」と言いかけた・・・・
