―From Toku-Tai Japanese Submarine Operations in Australian Waters― There were no valour awards in the Japanese military system. To fight to the end, to spurn death, was the fighting duty of every serviceman. Only in death could he earn the highest award, and that was to become a demi-god. British commanders soon discovered this philosophy and Lieutenant General Gordon Bennett, the Australian commander in Malaya, was to write: 'Our British system has failed to develop the psychological side of a soldier's training. To train a soldier how to use his weapons is not enough.' Self-destruction missions called 'Kamikaze'  were introduced by air squadrons at Saipan in 1944. Of the thousands of suicide actions carried out in the war, the submariners' was the greatest. Kamikaze campaign's very ferocity caused the United States Navy serious logistic and morale problems. But Japan lost the war. It's not the size of the man in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the man. But Japan lost the fight because of its size, less resources. Admiral Yamamoto was the only member of the Imperial Chiefs of Staff Committee to oppose Japan's entry into World War Ⅱ. He believed Japan had more to gain by conserving its military strength until the warring nations had exhausted their sources, but he was defeated by the vote of the Committee.

試訳：―特隊　オーストラリア海域における日本軍の潜水艦による作戦― 勇敢賞なんてものは日本軍の中にはなかった。最後まで戦うこと、死をものともしないことが戦闘する軍人、各自の義務だった。死をもってのみ最高位の賞を得ることができる、そして、準神様になることが約束されている。 英国の指揮者達はすぐに、この理念に気が付いた、ゴードン・ベネット中将は、マラヤにおけるオーストラリアの指揮者だったが、後日こう書いている：「われわれ英国方式が失敗していることは、兵士の心理的側面の訓練である。兵士に武器の使い方を教えるだけでは不十分だ。」 自爆任務で「神風」と呼ばれものが導入されたのは空軍中隊で、サイパンでの１９４４年のことだった。 幾千もの自殺行為が戦時中に実行されたが、潜航艇によるものが最も多い。 神風軍事作戦のものすごさは米国の海軍の軍需品の補給および兵士の士気に多大なる問題を引き起こした。 でも日本は戦争に負けた。 なぐり合いの勝敗を決するのは男の身体の大きさではなく、闘志の強さである でも日本は戦争に負けた、その大きさにより、その資源の乏しさにより。 山本司令長官はただひとり、帝国幕僚長会議で日本が第二次世界大戦へ参戦するのに反対した。彼は確信していた、日本にとって有利になるには参戦している国々がそれぞれの資源を使い果たすまで、日本の軍事力を温存しておくことだと、しかし幕僚長会議の投票による表決で敗れた。

（２７）結婚式の牧師の言葉

 Hugh Grant　と　Andie MacDowell の映画、フォー・ウェディング(原題：Four Weddings and a Funeral)の一番目の結婚式の場面の、牧師さんの言葉を、総合英語教材「フォー・ウェディング」の中から抜きだします。結婚式の途中で、「ふたりの結婚に異議があるものは、今、この時に、申し立てなさい、そうしないのであれば、永遠の沈黙を守りなさい。」と尋ねる場面があり、これはグッドアイデアだなと思いました。(３)の部分。

（１３）Footprints in the sand

During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.ここが、この話の最後にでてくる一番感動する部分です。なぜ足跡が一組しかないのかをLORDが説明されてます。私はcarryが「おんぶする：carry on one's back」を意味するということに気がつくまで、時間がかかり、やっと意味がわかったときには感動してしまいました。母に内容を日本語で説明し始めると、話の途中でこの話の落ちに気がついて、終わると、そんなことだろうと思ってたと言っていました。意味がやっとわかったとき思わず感動した私は単純すぎるのかなと思いました。この文章はセント・マリー大聖堂から、お土産に買ってきたピンバッチ（足跡のデザイン）をとめていた小さな紙切れに小さな文字で書かれていたものです。キリストに関するお話なので、転載しても、著作権とか無関係だと思うので、書き写します。

Footprints in the Sand
One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky, flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to him, and the other to the LORD. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life, there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it. "LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why, when I needed you most, you would leave me."  The LORD replied, "My precious, precious child, I love you, and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footsteps, it was then that I carried you."
